Manufacturers usually play it safe when it comes to midsize SUVs. Often their bread and butter in terms of sales, these SUV need to appeal to a wider audience. But Audi has decided to add a bit of drama to the all-new Q5, which will be launching in the country tomorrow. With the latest generation adopting the looks of the Q7, the Q5 has become more appealing to look at while still being reminiscent of the older model in terms of its footprint.
The 2018 Audi Q5 is based on the newer and lighter MLB Evo platform, which has made it lose 65kg of weight. Powering it will be a 2.0-litre diesel mill producing 190PS of peak power at 3,800-4,200rpm and 400Nm of max torque at 1,750-3,000rpm. It will be mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and feature all-wheel drive. The Q5 35 TDI Quattro S Tronic has a claimed 0-100kmph time of 7.9 seconds (quicker by 1.1 seconds than the older model) and a top speed of 218kmph. Audi also claims a mileage of 17.01kmpl, which is 2.85kmpl more than the outgoing model.
In the features department, the SUV packs quite a lot. For starters, you have an 8.3-inch infotainment system which runs Audi’s MMI interface and supports handwriting recognition. The sound system is a Bang & Olufsen unit and the driver also gets the 12.3-inch ‘Virtual Cockpit’ in place of a conventional analogue instrument cluster. You also have a wireless smartphone charger, but what's missing here are the connected AC vents and the retractable infotainment screen which is now found in most Audis. There is a certain old-school charm about the cabin, but, design-wise it doesn't look exciting enough.
In India, the Audi Q5 will rival the Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3 and the Volvo XC60. Prices are expected to start from somewhere near Rs 53 lakh, which will make it a properly competitive SUV. We have driven the all-new Audi Q5 and you can check it out here.
